Aeron LifeCycles to Present Salivary Testosterone Abstract at Endocrine Society Annual Meeting, June 21st, 2003
San Leandro, CA, May 2003. Aeron LifeCycles Clinical Laboratory will present an abstract at the Endocrine Society's 85th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, June 21st, 2003. The abstract entitled; "Validation of Salivary Testosterone as a Screening Test for Male Hypogonadism" is based on a recent study conducted by Dr. John E. Morley at St. Louis University. A manuscript is being prepared.
Salivary bioavailable testosterone (SBA-T) was shown to be highly significantly correlated with bioavailable testosterone measured in serum using an ammonium sulfate precipitation technique (previously thought to be one of the most sensitive and direct methods of bioavailable testosterone measurement in serum) and with the calculated free testosterone index of Vermeulen and Kaufman. Furthermore SBA-T was highly predictive of hypogonadal symptoms as assessed by the ADAM (Androgen Deficiency of the aging Male) questionnaire and Aging Male Survey (AMS).
Charles M. Dollbaum, MD, Ph.D. (Medical Director of Aeron LifeCycle Clinical Laboratory) along with John M. Kells (President and CEO of Aeron LifeCycles Laboratory) will be presenting the abstract validating salivary testosterone as a laboratory assay for the diagnosis of male Hypogonadism.
Solvay Pharmaceuticals funded the research. The study evaluated salivary testosterone as a screening tool for hypogonadal men. The study was blinded with Aeron LifeCycles Clinical Laboratory performing the salivary testosterone measurements (SBA-T). Patients were accrued at St Louis University (under IRB). The University laboratory performed Blood testing. Assay correlation and statistics were calculated at St. Louis University.
